Stirling Council schools will move from a one-week to a two-week October break in the 2022-23 academic year, with the summer break reduced by seven days.
School Term Dates

Councillors approved the changes at last week’s meeting (5 November) of the local authority’s Children and Young People Committee.

The new term dates will be published by Easter 2021.

It follows the results of a consultation that took place between 10 January and 21 February earlier this year.

Shared with all parent/carers and relevant staff, the consultation was accessible online via the Council website, while hard copies were also available.

Of the 5,324 responses to the question, ‘do you want a two-week October break?’, 70% answered yes.

Clackmannanshire and Falkirk Councils also undertook consultations on this proposal, with similar outcomes.

Significant support

Convener of Stirling Council’s Children and Young People Committee, Cllr Susan McGill said: “We had an excellent response to the consultation process from across our school communities, with parents, carers, staff and pupils all taking part.

“It is clear there is significant support for the changes to the holiday term dates and I welcome the fact that some neighbouring local authorities are following the same approach.”

Stirling Council schools had an additional week’s holiday in October during the current academic year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the early reopening of schools following the summer break.

Enough notice

Vice Convener, Christine Simpson said: “I’m pleased we are making these amendments and there has been encouraging initial feedback from staff and families about the extra week’s holiday in October this year.

“We know, however, that people have already made plans for 2021 so it’s important we don’t fast track these changes and give families and our staff enough notice to prepare for the new term dates.”
