Friday May 8th marks 75 years since the end of the Second World War, when Allied Forces announced the surrender of Germany in Europe.
As well as marking the Allies’ victory in 1945, VE Day (Victory in Europe) provides an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve in the UK Armed Forces and their families.
Online service and concert
Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the events that Stirling Council had planned in conjunction with the SSAFA (the Armed Forces Charity) and the British Legion to mark this occasion have been cancelled.
In their place, Stirling residents can take part in an online service of remembrance and a two-minute silence which will lead Scotland’s public commemorations for the landmark anniversary.
The service, which is being led by Legion Scotland and Poppyscotland in partnership with the Scottish Government, will also include children and families currently learning at home, as well as a video message of thanks from the First Minister and a concert.
Stirling families with links to Second World War
Stirling Provost Christine Simpson said: “This year’s VE Day celebrations marks 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. I am afraid that the Coronavirus pandemic and subsequent Government guidance has meant that we have had to cancel the local community celebrations we had planned to take place on the day.
“However, we will not let these challenging times prevent us from continuing to honour our heroes. There will be many families across Stirling who are able to trace a link back to the Second World War, either to someone who fought so bravely on our behalf or tragically lost their lives to secure our freedom.
“VE Day offers an opportunity for us all to remember the enormous sacrifices that were made and to celebrate, as people did 75 years ago, the arrival of peace in Europe.”
Pay tribute to Armed Forces and their families
Stirling Council Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Bryan Flannagan said: “The online service of remembrance offers a chance for us all to come together during this difficult period and commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
“The legacy and memory of this important milestone is one that should be kept alive for generations to come. As well as marking the Victory in Europe in 1945, the day will serve as an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have served, and continue to serve, in our Armed Forces and their families.”
