While there is no access to libraries, people are able to borrow books through the Select and Collect service.
With this latest timetable, which runs until late 7th November, each library is open until 6pm one evening per week, and those that normally open on a Saturday will also be available for Select and Collect then.
Libraries are also currently offering a service where people can choose up one or two children’s DVDs free of charge with their Select and Collect request.
Residents can contact individual libraries via phone or email to choose their books/DVDs and arrange a time to collect them.
Each library has times when staff can take calls and arrange times for collection.
Backlogs and other challenges from the ongoing pandemic mean libraries may not be able to accommodate requests for specific titles at this time.
When contacting a library, people should request:
- How many books they would like to borrow (maximum 5)
- Type of book (adult or junior)
- Genre of book – non-fiction, murder mystery, family saga, science fiction etc
Books can also be picked up at a number stops from the Council’s Mobile Libraries and the Housebound Service has resumed.
The Council’s libraries closed on March 17, in accordance with guidance from both the UK and Scottish Governments due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Preparations are underway to offer library access at a later point with full physical distancing and other hygiene measures in place.
Services including browsing, computer access, printing, scanning are currently unavailable.
A welcome step forward
Convener of Stirling Council’s Community Planning and Regeneration Committee, Cllr Chris Kane said: “While our much-loved libraries aren’t fully open yet, the introduction of the ‘select and collect’ book borrowing service is a welcome step forward.
“We want to roll out access to more of our popular library services as soon as possible, but safety will remain the top priority which is why we are restarting services in a phased approach that continues to comply with national guidance.”
All returned books are placed in quarantine for 72 hours so there will be a delay in discharging books from readers’ accounts.
Books can only be returned if readers have an appointment to pick up books. All books that have been out on loan have been renewed and will not accrue fines.
The Council’s e-book and other digital lending services are still available, having proved hugely popular in the months of lockdown.
Step-by-step approach
Vice Convener, Cllr Maureen Bennison said: “The huge rise in use of our libraries’ e-services has been a welcome boost in these challenging times and I’m delighted people can now also get their hands on physical books via the ‘select and collect’ system.
“Our libraries are important community hubs but given the current situation we must proceed with a cautious step-by-step approach before we can fully open their doors to the public and restart our wide range of services.”
Staff will do their best to provide digital copies of records requested or transcripts and summaries of information when it is not possible to make copies.
