The first stage involves relocating the existing bus stop from the corner of Murray Place/Station Road to a new location in front of the Spar shop.
Both roads will remain open during the first weeks of work and access to the shops along Murray Place will be maintained at all times.
Convenor of the Environment and Housing Committee, Councillor Jim Thomson, said: “This work is being undertaken to enhance the crossing conditions for pedestrians at a key city centre location.
“The changes to the crossing were agreed following a review of the layout and they have been subject to an external safety audit to ensure they meet necessary guidelines and standards.”
Vice Convenor, Councillor Danny Gibson, said: “We are taking a proactive approach to ensuring the safety of our pedestrians by carrying out these changes. The works will maintain a safe route for pedestrians where there is a high demand for them to cross the road.
“Please keep an eye out for updates on how the work is progressing and of dates for future road closures. Thank you for your patience while we undertake this work.”
The changes being carried out to the crossing include:
- Moving the zebra crossing approximately four metres down Station Road.
- Adjusting the kerbline on Station Road and Murray place to improve the alignment for buses.
- Installing a short section of barriers to minimise the risk of pedestrians crossing either side of the crossing.
- Improving the road surface and road markings to highlight the junction and zebra crossing.
- Relocating the bus stop on Murray Place further back along Murray Place (to the location of the current loading bay) to improve bus movements.
