These necessary measures have been in place since 30 March, in accordance with Government restrictions and resource challenges within the local authority’s Waste Service during the COVID-19 pandemic.
With an extension of national restrictions and continued pressure on staffing levels, the Council will maintain its focus on priority collections.
The situation will be kept under review, with the aim of returning to a full service as soon as possible. An update will be provided to the public during the week commencing 11 May.
Thanks to residents across Stirling
Convener of Stirling Council’s Environment and Housing Committee, Cllr Jim Thomson said: “Firstly, I would like to thank residents across Stirling for their patience in adjusting to the alternative arrangements, and the tremendous support they have shown for our staff which has helped keep their spirits high during these difficult times.
“With the extension of Government restrictions and our resource challenges, we will have to maintain the current measures for a little longer but we are hopeful we will soon be able to resume more of our services.
“We will continually monitor the situation over the coming weeks and once we are in position to provide an update, we will share it with the public at the earliest opportunity.”
Necessary decision
Vice Convener Cllr Danny Gibson said: “We understand the inconvenience a reduced waste service causes for people, so continuing to focus on priority collections for the next three weeks was not a decision we took lightly, but it was a necessary one.
“We appreciate the support from householders across Stirling during this difficult period, and it’s also important we recognise the outstanding efforts of our staff who have continued kerbside collections in extremely challenging conditions.”
A summary of the arrangements over the next three weeks can be viewed below.

- Grey Bins will continue to be collected as normal every two weeks on your scheduled collection day.

COVID-19 – Safe Waste Presentation Procedures
Any individuals asked to self-isolate, either as a precaution or because they are confirmed to have Coronavirus (COVID-19), should follow this advice to dispose of their household waste to ensure the virus is not spread via personal waste:
- Individuals should place all personal waste such as used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths, securely in a plastic bag or bin liner
- This plastic bag should then be placed in another plastic bag and securely tied
- These bags must be stored separately to other waste for at least 72 hours before being placed in your grey bin.
Other FAQs
Can I leave extra waste alongside my bin for collection?
Please note that additional waste left next to your bin will not be collected. This is protect the health and safety of our operatives who are working in very challenging conditions during the current pandemic.
Latest research indicates the COVID-19 virus could survive on certain materials for up to 72 hours. For this reason, and to minimise the risk of infection to our operatives, we are asking residents not to present side waste.
I have extra waste, how should I store it?
We suggest that householders can store, where space permits, bagged dry recycling (plastics/cans/cartons; glass bottles/jars) for services that have been temporarily reduced.
Grey bin space can be prioritised for food waste, nappies and garden waste that cannot be home composted.
For households with gardens, full brown bins should be stored in the coolest area of the garden. If garden clippings are being stored in a corner of the garden, these should be periodically turned to provide air and this part of the garden should be kept out of reach of pets (as this material naturally composts down and should not be consumed).
If you are interested in home composting, you can find more information on the Stirling Council website via the following link: https://www.stirling.gov.uk/bins-waste-recycling/home-composting/
