A children’s author returned to her former Stirling primary school to help pupils stay on the write track.
Author visit to Balfron Primary

Angela Robb enthralled P5 pupils at Balfron Primary School with readings from her debut children’s novel Hamster Gangster.

The author introduced the youngsters to the lead character, Rocco, who stars in a fast, funny and frenetic story of one hamster in a world of rodent gangsters.

No ordinary pet Hamster, Rocco is tired of being kicked around in a plastic ball and is certain of his true destiny: to become a great leader among rodents.

Angela, who was also at Balfron High School, answered questions about the characters in her novel and encouraged the children to develop their own writing ambitions.

P5 teacher Kate Grisanti said: “It was a great experience for the children to not only meet an author but to make the connection to the school.

“We were looking to add some new books to our library and Angela’s new book has proven really popular with the children. The pupils really enjoyed learning about how she got the ideas for the book and how she was able to pull them all together to create the final story.”

Angela said: “I loved going back to my old school and meeting the current pupils. My novel was inspired by my own childhood experience of owning a daredevil hamster. I wanted to write a story that would make children laugh and would take them on an action-packed adventure with a character they could root for.

“Hopefully by hearing of the benefits and joy that writing has brought me, it will inspire some of the Balfron Primary pupils to take up writing as well.”
