With Stirling Council Fisheries this year celebrating the positive local spirit surrounding the river, Callander resident Mike Luti stepped forward to throw a traditional quaich of single malt in to the waters to toast the new season.
Accompanied by Provost Christine Simpson, local schoolchildren and pipers, dozens of keen anglers joined the traditional parade through the town to the river banks to watch the ceremony.
Stirling Provost Christine Simpson said, “The turnout for this year’s opening was just fantastic once again and shows how popular angling is as a pastime for both residents and visitors in the Stirling area.
“Anyone who visits our shores will be able to experience some of the best fishing the UK has to offer, as well as embrace the local spirit of the angling communities surrounding our rivers.”
To mark the ninth running of the event, for the first time, the first nine days of fishing between February 1st and February 10th (No Sunday fishing) will be completely free.
Anglers will not need to collect a permit for February 1st but will require one for the other eight days. These can be collected from Angling Active or James Bayne Fishing Tackle.
Councillors also recently approved a range of exciting new permit prices that makes Stirling Council Fisheries one of the best value salmon fisheries in the UK. Anglers can fish for 9 months for just £200, while youths up to the age of 21 can now fish the whole season for only £15.
Vice-Convenor of the Environment and Housing Committee, councillor Danny Gibson, said, “It is wonderful to see so many people turn out to support the opening of the salmon season on the Teith. Hopefully the new measures announced by the Fisheries team will bring even more keen anglers to the Teith to enjoy all that the area has to offer.”
