Andrew Mayhew lost his footing on the street outside his house in McNeill Crescent and fell face first to the ground, injuring his lips, teeth and ankle in the process.

The 77-year-old was left dazed and hurt but was helped back to his feet by the kind acts of four Stirling High School pupils, who leapt to his rescue on their way to school.

The identity of these young good Samaritans had remained a mystery to Mr Mayhew until Stirling High head teacher Paul Cassidy learned of the heart-warming story and unearthed the local heroes in his student body.

Charlie Beck, 16, Euan Thomson, 17 and brothers Tom and Finn Simpson, aged 17 and 15 respectively, were responsible for not only alerting Mr Mayhew’s wife to his fall but calling an ambulance to attend to his injuries.

Two council staff also assisted in righting Mr Mayhew and settled him down with a bottle of water and some company until the emergency team arrived.

Today (Thursday April 19), Mr Mayhew was reunited with the kind-hearted pupils at Stirling High where the boys’ actions were praised roundly by both their head teacher and the council’s Children and Young People committee convenor, Councillor Susan McGill.

Paul Cassidy, Stirling High Head Teacher said: “On behalf of the school community I would like to commend Charlie, Finn, Tom and Euan for their actions in helping Mr Mayhew.

“The boys have demonstrated the values of our school community and they are a credit to their families.”

His sentiments were echoed by Cllr McGill, who added: “The kindness shown by these boys should be a lesson to us all. They came to the aid of someone they didn’t know in an hour of need and showed what community spirit is all about.

“Stirling High will no doubt be proud to have them represent the school and wider area of Stirling in such a positive light and they deserve all the praise coming their way.”
