The Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4-11 to read six books during the long summer holiday – this year’s theme was ‘Animal Agents’
Children's reading can dip outside of term time. Every year, the annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children across the country into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence.
Education Convenor Cllr Susan McGill said, “It’s fantastic to see so many of our children developing a love of reading and books and continuing to read outside of school. Completing the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge can not only give a child a great sense of confidence from their accomplishment but made sure they felt ready to start the new school year. A big well done to all our budding young readers on completing the challenge.”
Stirling Council has been working with a number of partners to give all children who complete the challenge a chance to celebrate and every child who took part has received a medal during special celebration events taking place across the Council’s libraries.
Booster Cushion Theatre performed “Hansel, Gretel and You, Who?” to a packed audience of children and parents at the Tolbooth Theatre, while Bannockburn Library were joined by exotic insects and animals in a Zoolab visit. Children also enjoyed a number of free activities organised with our partners at the Wallace Monument, Blair Drummond Safari Park and the Woodland Experience in Balfron, as well as activities at Stirling University, The Peak, Maclaren High and Balfron High.
