The service has recently employed an apprentice Monumental Technician, Michael Hendry. His bespoke training involves learning how to survey and stabilise memorials using specialist techniques to assess structural integrity and recording findings.

Michael has recently completed mini excavator training and has also completed a course provided by the Scottish Lime Centre in Making and Using Traditional Mortars.

Newest apprentice Chris Russell, who currently attends Oatridge College, has also gained certification in the use of mini excavators and his PA1/PA6 qualification in the Safe Use of Herbicides.

James Philiben completed his apprenticeship in Land Services and has now been successful in securing a Gravedigger/Gardener role.  His employment started in August of this year and he has already completed training in the use of mini excavator and been put forward for up-skilling his driver’s license to Class 1.

In recognition of the historic nature of the area, the Council also offers the opportunity for those within the team to achieve the National Progression Award provided by Historic Environment Scotland. This qualification, which is offered to the apprentice Monumental Technician, enables participants to work in an historic build environment.

Stirling Council’s Environment Convenor Danny Gibson said: “Our Cemeteries Team provide an important public service. Michael, Chris and James are all excellent examples of what can be achieved through an apprenticeship with Stirling Council.  I’m delighted to congratulate each of them on their individual achievements and wish them well for the future. These successes are evidence of the Council’s commitment to improving the skill set of employees both new and existing.”

Cemeteries Officer Barbara Docherty said: “The Cemeteries Team provides a sensitive service and operates in a very emotional environment and all three apprentices have shown remarkable composure while working within the service. These qualifications further underpin our commitment to providing excellent training opportunities tailored to specific environments. Our apprentices are valued members of the team and I am extremely proud of their accomplishments.”
