Play on Pedals is a national training scheme which provides the learning, skills and resources to enable nursery teachers to promote cycling to pre-school children in a fun and interactive way.
Following the hugely successful Play on Pedals programme in Glasgow, the instructor training element is now being rolled out in nurseries across the country by Cycling Scotland, and representatives from 11 Stirling nurseries took part in a training session at the new Cowie Nursery last week.
As a result of the training, practitioners can help pre-school children learn about the parts of a bicycle, how to fit a helmet correctly and the basics of looking after their bikes. Through a series of fun and imaginative activities, they will be helped to develop their balance and control skills, often using a pedal-less balance bike.
Laurie Todd from Baker Street Nursery said: “I loved the Play on Pedals course and cannot wait to start the course with the children in my setting.”
Stirling Council’s Education Convenor Alistair Berrill said: “Play on Pedals is a great scheme and I hope that as many children as possible will be able to participate and to benefit from it.”
