The pupils involved were part of a team that created the new ‘Fresco’ catering sub-brand in the school cafeteria to encourage health eating, which was officially launched on 18th April 2016.
Their motivation was to create something trendy, good value, quick and simple that would encourage pupils who eat elsewhere at lunchtime to stay on school premises, thus promoting healthier eating habits.
Following a presentation about Fresco at the ASSIST FM School Catering Conference earlier this year top over 200 people, the pupils were awarded with a Better Eating, Better Living (BEBL) Award by Alistair McIntyre, chair of ASSIST FM, last month.
Stirling High Head Teacher Paul Cassidy said: “The young people from Stirling High School have engaged with this project in a highly professional manner. They have shown outstanding communication skills and worked as a highly efficient team. Their Fresco branding and menu is of such a high standard that they have been awarded an award from ASSIST FM based on their superb presentation. The school community is very proud of their work and pleased that it is now being launched in all Stirling secondary schools.”
Education Convenor Alistair Berrill said: “This has been a very worthwhile initiative. Healthy eating is so important, particularly when it comes to establishing good eating habits at as young an age as possible. I only wish something like this had been in place when I was at school!”
The Fresco menu, consisting of themed meals like Italiano, Mexicano, Americano and World, is now being launched across all the secondary schools that Stirling Council provides meals for, due to the positive impact it has had on the uptake of school meals.
