Dunblane pupils got a treat this week when an award-winning celebrity chef turned up to help them create a mouth-watering dish in their school kitchen.
Dunblane Primary Cooking skills

Tom Kitchin – chef, author and owner of Michelin star Edinburgh restaurant, The Kitchin – has appeared on various television cooking shows including The Great British Menu, MasterChef and Saturday Kitchen.

He visited pupils at Dunblane Primary School on Friday 24 February to work with them in the school’s kitchen, completing a demonstration and supporting pupils to create a dish, before taking part in a question and answer session with Primary 4-7 pupils about his education, training and career.

The visit came as a result of the school receiving a national grant from the Food for Thought Fund which allowed them to purchase the resources needed for the school’s very own, fully equipped kitchen, which allows pupils to learn life skills and to transfer their knowledge from the classroom to a real life context.

Depute Head Teacher Shirley Gallivan said: “As part of our Developing the Young Workforce work this term we have set up a fully operation kitchen for the pupils to use to transfer their skills from the classroom into a real life context.  The pupils have been motivated and excited by this new facility.  We also have planters with vegetables where children are learning about the farm to fork process.  We know that this is something Chef Kitchin is passionate about and we are delighted that he was able to come along and inspire the pupils today.”

Mr Kitchin said: “I’m extremely passionate about encouraging youngsters to become excited about cooking. As a dad of four, I know how important it is to teach children about different food types, the importance of healthy eating and to inspire them to learn and eat new things. It was great to meet the children at Dunblane Primary school – who knows, one of them could be a chef in the making!”
