Members of Stirling Council’s Public Safety Committee today welcomed students from Wallace High School to hear their concerns about safety at the Customs Roundabout underpasses.

The Customs Roundabout underpasses provide pedestrian access to the communities of Riverside, Raploch, Causewayhead and the City Centre. During today’s Committee meeting Councillors, Council Officers and Police Scotland gave reassurances surrounding the safety of the area.

The students gave a presentation to the Committee and were given the opportunity to ask questions to Council Officers and Police Scotland.

The Committee noted the changes that had been made since the students made the short film, which highlighted poor lighting and signage, vandalism and litter. The students also requested visible CCTV.

Public Safety Convenor Councillor Maureen Bennison said “The Committee would like to thank the students for bringing this issue to our attention. Councillors, Council Officers and Police Scotland have pledged to work together to improve the public safety of the communities who use the underpasses. Improvements have already been made to the underpasses since the students’ video was produced. This includes improved lighting and daily litter picks of the area. I am of the understanding Police Scotland will undertake a Public Safety Audit of the Customs Roundabout and a further paper will be brought forward to the Public Safety Committee to look at those results.”

The Police Scotland Public Security Audit for the Customs Roundabout underpasses will take place on Thursday. A joint Public Safety Audit will also be carried by Stirling Council with Police Scotland across all underpasses in the city in the coming months.
