Stirling Council Leader Johanna Boyd has echoed COSLA’s (the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) warning that further cuts to Local Government funding in the Budget announcement on 15th December would have severe consequences for jobs across the country.

Councillor Boyd said: “I, along with many other Council leaders across the country, share COSLA’s concerns about the effects of further budget cuts to local authorities in Scotland.

“Stirling Council has already experienced sizeable budget cuts – £30.7million for the five year period between 2012 and 2017 - and while we are doing everything to protect services and jobs, a further reduction in funding will place an intolerable strain on what we do and how we do it, with an unavoidable impact on jobs.

“This in turn would undoubtedly have a negative effect on some of our key services, such as education, roads maintenance and social care. These services underpin our communities and I know that feedback gained through our Priority Based Budgeting (PBB) process showed that residents feel strongly about protecting them.

“We are a financially well-managed Council and a lot of work has gone into finding ways to reduce our budget through transformational change and restructuring. While we have managed to maintain our provision of vital community services up until this point, further funding cuts would have a big impact on our ability to do this.”
