Getting married is possibly the most important and exciting occasion in any couple’s life – however, it can also be the most stressful time for all those involved.

  • The minimum notice period has been extended from 14 clear days to 28 clear days. Anyone lodging marriage or civil partnerships notices will have to allow for a 28 clear days notice period.
  • The legal preliminaries to marriage in Scotland are explained in a separate leaflet called Marriage in Scotland.
  • There is no residential qualification required for marriage in Scotland.
Both parties to the marriage have to fill in and sign a Marriage Notice Form. The forms should be returned to the Registrar where the marriage is to take place, within three months, but at least 28 clear days before the marriage. We would recommend that marriage notice forms are submitted to the Registrar ten to twelve weeks before the date of the marriage.
  • Both birth certificates and fees should be with the completed marriage notice forms.  Extra documents will be required to go with the forms if either party has been married or in a civil partnership before. The Registrar will be able to help with this.
  • If a person is subject to immigration controls, they will need to meet certain immigration eligibility requirements. In particular, you will need to provide a Declaration of Immigration Status form. You can get this form from the Registrar’s office or on the NRS (National Records of Scotland) website.
  • You will need evidence to support the statement you make on the Declaration of Immigration Status form.  
  • Foreign nationals should allow enough time for submitting the marriage notice forms if extra documentation is required.
 
Two people should be present to act as witnesses to your marriage (usually best man and bridesmaid).  The witnesses must be 16 or over and be capable of understanding the proceedings.  The full names and addresses of both witnesses should be given to the Registrar. Please also complete a Witness and Celebrant form and return it with your paperwork.
 
An interpreter will have to be present at the marriage if either party or witnesses are unable to understand or converse in English. Please consult the Registrar for advice.

Please note that all documentation submitted to the Registrar must be originals. We cannot accept photocopies.
 
Your Registrar will update you on the current statutory fees and any extra fees.
  • We can provide a personal and professional non-religious ceremony for any couple wishing to renew their vows.
  • Our staff will assist you in arranging this special day and will deliver a personal ceremony tailor-made to your needs.
  • You can include the exchanging of rings, regardless of whether they are new or old!

Renewal of vows - £115.13 (includes pre-ceremony consultation, ceremony and certificate).

Forms required for civil and religious or belief marriages

Basic statutory fees for all civil and religious or belief marriages

  • £30.00 for each person registering a marriage notice form
  • £55.00 civil marriage fee
  • £10.00 for each extract of the entry in the register of marriages (applied for within one month of registration of the marriage)

Therefore, the minimum statutory fee a couple will be charged is £125.

In addition to the basic statutory civil marriage/partnership fees, depending on where and when your civil marriage/partnership is taking place, some of the following fees may also apply:

Civil Marriage/Partnership at a Registration Office:

  • £195.00 Saturday
  • £250.00 Sunday or Public Holiday

Accommodation fee at Stirling (Viewforth room hire)

  • Free – Drummond Room- up to 12 (incl. Bridal Party)
  • £65.00 – Drummond Room – seats 13-50 guests
  • £250.00 – Council Chambers – seats 60 guests

Civil Marriage/Partnership at an alternative Venue:

  • £155.00 Monday to Friday
  • £230.00 Saturday
  • £300.00 Sunday or public holiday

Payment by debit or credit card can also be accepted at most offices, cheques and postal orders should be made payable to Stirling Council.
